Why is your nose blocked?
A blocked nose can result from structural problems, inflammation, or both. Common causes include:
- Deviated septum – a crooked nasal wall restricting airflow, often from injury or natural development
- Turbinate enlargement – swollen internal structures narrowing the nasal airway
- Nasal valve collapse – weakness in the nasal sidewall causing it to collapse during breathing
- Chronic sinusitis and nasal polyps – persistent sinus inflammation or growths blocking the nasal passages
- Nasal trauma – internal structural damage from previous injury
- Adenoid enlargement – primarily in children and young adults
Many patients have more than one contributing factor. Identifying the specific cause is the first step toward effective treatment.
How nasal obstruction is treated
Medical management
Initial treatment may involve medications aimed at reducing inflammation and managing conditions such as allergic rhinitis. This is often considered before surgical options, depending on the underlying cause.
Surgical management
In some cases, procedures such as septoplasty, turbinate reduction, or functional rhinoplasty may be considered to address structural factors contributing to nasal obstruction. The most appropriate approach depends on individual assessment and clinical findings.

Dr Philip Jumeau
Dr Philip Jumeau MBBS (Hons) FRACS is an ENT surgeon whose practice focuses on nasal airway surgery and reconstruction.
He has over 25 years of surgical experience, with particular depth in structural nasal obstruction, revision surgery for patients with previous unsuccessful procedures, and nasal reconstruction following trauma.
Dr Jumeau operates and teaches at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital and consults privately at Epworth Healthcare. He is actively involved in surgical education and regularly presents at national and international conferences.
